Titanium Nitride
?
Organic compound, titanium nitride is a chemical with the molecular formula TIN and a mass at 61.88. TiN powder can be yellow-brown. Ultrafine TiN can be darkened, while TiN crystals are golden. TiN’s melting temperature is 2950. Mohs toughness rating is 8.9 The resistance to thermal shock is exceptional. TiN melts at a higher temperature than any other transition metals and nitrides. The TiN has a lower density that other metal nitrides. TiN can conduct electricity. This includes electrical contacts, and electrodes for Molten Salt Electrolysis.
Titanium Nitride has the following main features
Two types of titanium dioxide are available (Ti2N2) and one type each of titanium tetranitride,(Ti3N4). You can describe titanium dinitride as a yellow solid. Boil water to dissolve. The sodium hydroxide solution in hot water will give off ammonia. It is similar to titanium dioxide.
It can be done by direct reactions between titanium and nitrogen at 1200 degC. This can also be done using hydrogen-mixed gases and titanium tetrachloride as a solvent. Titanium dinitride is made by heating titanium tetrachloride in ammonia and nitrogen at between 900-1000°C. Titanium Tetranitride can be obtained by heating titanium Tetrachloride and ammonia to 1000oC.
Titanium Nitride, its applications
1. To protect metal edges from corrosion, titanium nitride has been widely employed. This will often prolong their life by as much as threefold.
2. Because of its metallic shine, it is often used as decorative ornamentation for clothing or cars. They are frequently used to make packaging pipes and windows, and for an outer coating with nickel (Ni), as well as for chromium [Cr].
3. It’s also useful in the military and aerospace because it protects bikes and motorcycles, and the shock-absorbing shafts for remote-controlled cars.
4. FDA approved, non-toxic and safe material. This material can be used for medical purposes, as well as sharpening edges of scalpel blades.
5. Microelectronics uses titanium nitride folios to create a barrier between metal contacts and active devices. The film can be dissolved onto silicon metal to create a strong conductive connection.
6. It also shares the mechanical and chemical properties of ceramics, which is why it’s called “barrier”. It’s used widely to increase transistor performance in 45nm-chip designs. A combination of titanium Nitride (eg. The combination of titanium Nitride and a gate Dielectric Layer (eg. 7. The high biological stability extends the application field of this alloy to bioelectronic electrodes, such as subretinal prosthesis projects and microelectromechanical systems (biological microelectromechanical systems) in biomedicine, making smart implants or in vivo biosensors Able to withstand severe body fluid corrosion.
