Aluminium oxide, an inorganic compound with the chemical name Al2O3, is an inorganic material. This high-hardness compound has a melting point at 2054 °C and boiling point at 2980 °C. It can be ionized at very high temperatures, and is commonly used for the production of refractory substances.

Alumina for industrial use is made from bauxite (3H2O*3O3) and diaspore. Chemical methods are used to prepare Al2O3 for high purity. It is possible to find Al2O3 in many forms. More than 10 are currently known. The main three crystal types are: a, b, and g. They all have different structures and different properties. At temperatures higher than 1300degC, it can be almost entirely converted into Al2O3.
