High temperatures are able to produce a nickel-steel alloy with exceptional yield and tensile properties, as well as creep fracture characteristics. The nickel alloy is versatile and can be used from low temperatures all the way to long-term, 1200degF use.
Inconel718 has one distinctive feature. It contains niobium to enable age hardening. Addition of molybdenum to the alloy matrix hardens it and gives it high strength. Aluminum and titanium can also be added to popular NiCr alloys.
It is simple to make this nickel-steel alloy and it can be welded under precipitation or annealing hardening conditions.
