Silica Aerogel is a type gel material that uses dispersed media as gas. It is a nanoporous permanent material, composed of polymer molecules or colloidal particles. The unique structure and characteristics of the material make it an attractive choice for many applications.
The properties and uses of silicon aerogels
Due to its special network structure silicon aerogel exhibits exceptional thermal, optical, electric, mechanical and other properties. The product has wide application potential.
I Transparent insulation
Solar collectors use transparent SO2 Aerogels to insulate the heat. They can also serve as insulation for cryogenic devices such as refrigerators.
It also happens to be the lightest material (under supercritical conditions, its density can drop as low 3 kgm 1/3), thus giving it the Guinness-record. Silica aerogel can be prepared at laboratory temperature under atmospheric pressure to achieve a 134.3kgm 1/3 density, making it ideal for thermal insulation on the space vehicle. NASA is using the material in heat insulation layers of the British Jaguar fighter. As an insulation layer, the “Mars Rover’s” silicon aerogel is used for Mars night at a temperature of -100 degrees.
For insulation, additional metal was used in the SO2 rocket. A framework material was polyimide. An aluminum film with porous SO2 airgels was applied to the aluminum. You can get 5 times more heat insulation if you stack the film on 10 layers.
II. Application for Electricity
In solid material, the dielectric constant for silicon aerogel can vary between 1-2 and very low. The very large-scale integrated Circuit (UISI), which is seeing increasing device integration, will use silicon aerogel to make the substrate materials for large scale integrated Circuits (UISI). Researchers are currently studying several low dielectric substances, among which SD2 airgels can be used to develop ULSI.
3. Acoustic impedance coupling materials
SD2 aerogel produces a longitudinal sound propagation rate at 100 m/s. The SD2 aerogel’s acoustic impedance increases with increasing density. Because of this, it makes a great acoustic Impedance coupling substance. It can be used for decoration of floor materials, and to create acoustic impedance in mechanical devices such at transportation and ultrasound. Also, it can be used in acoustic delay and high-temperature sound insulation material. Transparent aerogels may also be used in insulation windows and solar insulation.
IV. Use of mechanical properties
Silicon aerogels can be compressedive, elastic and low-tensile. The aerogels’ mechanical properties can be enhanced by aging. They also have the ability to increase their shear values by up 230%. They are therefore able to be used in super dampers for their kinetic energy absorption. You can absorb a lot more energy when vibration compresses. Carbon aerogel, silicon aerogel, and carbon aerogel both have low vibration impendence materials that capture frozen minerals. They can withstand vibration pressures up to 100 atmospheres.
