316L vs. 316 Stainless Steel

Posted on 2023-04-01 By admin
A316L stainless steel: What does it mean? Also known as marine quality stainless, 316L steel is one of the most sought-after austenitic grades. Iron is the second most common alloy component. Chromium (16-18%) or nickel (10-12%) are the main components. You will also find molybdenum (2-4%), and small amounts silicon, sulfur and phosphorous (1%).

Common uses include chemical, petrochemical and food processing.

316L vs.316L

For marine use, both the 316L and 316L stainlesssteel alloys are available. One difference is that 316L contains a higher carbon percentage. For 316L compliance, the carbon content can’t exceed 0.03%. This reduces the risk of carbon deposition, making it an excellent choice for welding. You also get maximum corrosion resistance.

316 stainless steel is a mild carbon-containing alloy with low levels of molybdenum. Its range is between 2 and 3 It is resistant to acidic, corrosion, and other high-temperature elements.

These materials can bend and stretch easily because they are flexible.

What grades of stainless steel do I need?

These are some of the things you should be thinking about:

Corrosion resistance

316L is the most suitable choice for applications that require high corrosion resistance and high temperatures. 316L has a lower carbon content than 316. This makes it more resistant to corrosion, and also resists rusting as 316 stainless.

It’s

The price of 316L and 316L stainless are almost equal.

Magnificent properties

It has a low magnetic field response. Most stainless steels are not as magnetic, even 316. They are either austenitic (or even non-magnetic).

Some products from 316 stainless are also capable of being cold-formed and welded. The austenite’s structure is transformed into ferromagnetic marmacite. It’s much easier to find 316L stainlesssteel with some level of magnetism.

Practical

In different industries, you can use either type of stainless. Because of its durability and strength, as well as resistance against corrosion, stainless steel 316 is most commonly used. The 316L stainless steel is popular for use in pharmaceutical equipment and photography because it resists chemical corrosive as well.
